Manufacturing risk is not a single problem. It changes with production activity, workforce exposure, machinery, materials, products, premises, suppliers and the way each manufacturer operates. This benchmark uses official public indicators to help owners, finance directors, operations managers and risk leads structure a broker conversation. It does not score an individual business, predict insurance outcomes or replace professional advice.
Many businesses start with manufacturing insurance before moving into this specialist page to compare sector-specific cover and risk detail.

Built for manufacturing operators comparing cover, policy structure and risk priorities.

Clear separation between broad commercial pages, cover pages, risk pages and practical guidance.

Useful whether the business is a workshop, factory, warehouse-linked manufacturer or OEM supplier.

Designed to support a better insurance conversation, not just a broad generic quote.
Source scope
This benchmark uses public sector-level context from the Office for National Statistics and the Health and Safety Executive. The figures support preparation questions only and should not be treated as a measure of any individual manufacturer's insurance risk.
ONS production context
- The ONS Index of Production for May 2026 reported that production output increased by 0.1% in the three months to May 2026 compared with the three months to February 2026.
- Manufacturing was the only positive contributor among the four main production sectors over that three-month period, with estimated growth of 1.6%.
- Monthly production output decreased by 0.5% in May 2026, while manufacturing was estimated to have risen by 0.1% in that month.
- ONS also reported that output rose in 8 of the 13 manufacturing subsectors over the three months to May 2026, and in 7 of the 13 subsectors in May 2026 itself.
HSE workplace risk context
- HSE Manufacturing statistics in Great Britain, 2025 provide manufacturing-specific health and safety context using data up to March 2025.
